“Can you design my living room in 10 hours?”

It’s a question I hear often. In a world where we want everything fast and budget-friendly, it’s a fair question. If you just need a sofa that fits through the door and a rug that covers the floor, 10 hours is plenty.

But there is a massive difference between filling a room and designing a space.

The “Functional” vs. The “Personal”

If we only look at functionality, design is easy to calculate. A table + four chairs + a lamp = a dining room. That’s basic math.

However, true interior design is about putting function and style into a product that is custom-made for you. It’s about finding that specific vintage Mid-century sideboard that fits your hallway perfectly, or sourcing a color palette that makes you feel calm the moment you walk through the door.

Why the Hours Vary

The aesthetic part of a project is where the “strict hours” fall away. Depending on your wishes, the process can be simple or incredibly detailed.

  • The 10-Hour Result: You get a room that works. It’s practical and safe, but it likely looks like a page from a big-box retail catalog. It lacks that “signature” feel.
  • The “Beyond the Clock” Result: You get a home that tells a story. This takes time spent hunting for the right textures, comparing subtle paint undertones, and sourcing unique pieces that won’t be found in your neighbor’s house.

The Cost of “Saving” Time

I understand the desire to reduce costs. But when we cut hours, we usually cut the soul of the project. Lowering the price often means:

  1. Fewer options: We take the first thing that works rather than the best thing available.
  2. Less detail: We miss those small touches—the lighting layers, the custom hardware, the art—that make a space feel “finished.”
  3. Template Design: The design becomes a “one size fits all” rather than a custom-tailored suit.

Design is an Investment, Not a Commodity

When you ask for a design, you aren’t just buying my time; you are buying my eye, my network of vintage sources, and my ability to see the potential in your home that isn’t visible yet.

A beautiful, cohesive space that reflects your personality is a result of careful planning and patience. It’s about choosing every piece with a purpose.

So, can a room be done in 10 hours? Technically, yes. But your home deserves more than just “technically done.” It deserves to be yours.
